Just like there are iconic cars that age beautifully, transcend time, and carry rich histories, the same can be said for certain watches. One of those timepieces for me is the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph. While I can’t afford a watch like that just yet, there are attainable alternatives that capture the same sporty yet refined aesthetic. That’s where Timex comes in with their Marlin collection. The Timex Marlin Tachymeter Chronograph offers that ‘Carrera’ vibe—without breaking the bank
Some history before we get on with the review. Marlin is Timex’s flagship collection of vintage-inspired watches, making its first appearance in the 1960s offering water-resistance dress watches. Timex revived the Marlin collection back in 2010, producing affordable automatics, chronographs and special collaboration watches.
Here are my thoughts on the Timex Marlin Tachymeter Chronograph in 40mm with leather strap. Disclaimer: I’m not what would you call a watch nerd, maybe a watch enthusiast but I consider myself a normal person who likes watches. Watches are great tools that can make your life easier but also improve your attire. For photo reference I have a medium size wrist (6.75in in diameter) and I’ll be touching topic such as design, wearability, practicality and how it fits into my daily life.
Design

There are a few iconic racing watches I can think of, but nothing like the TAG Heuer Carrera (picture in the right). The Timex Marlin Chronograph design channels the spirit of 1960s reflecting the golden era of motorsport watches; making it an affordable alternative. The result is a simple, balanced, and elegant timepiece with undeniable vintage charm.
Let’s begin with its size and layout. The watch measures 40 × 13 × 47 mm (diameter × thickness × lug‑to‑lug) and my unit weighs 53 g with an aftermarket racing strap. It features the typical three‑button chronograph configuration—start, stop, and reset—and a 20 mm lug width, making it compatible with most standard watch bands.
You can see that Timex revived its Marlin design from the 60s when you look a the dial. My version features a silver color with a sunburst finish and with dark sub-dials at the 3, 6 & 9 o’clock position. The monochromatic hand markers have a split line (in black), inspired from Timex’s Viscount models, adding contrast and improving visibility and giving it a more premium look. The monochromatic design flows to the markers but the primary markers (3, 9 & 12) add dimension to the dial. A black tachymeter ring around the edge makes the watch appear smaller on wrist. The dial has subtle branding and a date window, between the 4 and 5 o’clock markers and is topped by a acrylic dome that finish off the retro vibe of this watch.
Its worth noting that the seconds hand do not tick (move) in normal time keeping mode. This hand only works when the chronograph / stopwatch is in use, moving between 5-6 ticks per second. The chronograph function is complemented by the 9 o’clock sub-dial as this one captures the elapsed minutes up to 60 minutes. In normal time-keeping mode the 3 & 6 o’clock sub-dials show time in 24hr format and the seconds, respectively.
The Timex Marlin Chronograph watch its battery powered with a lifespan of 2-3 years in normal conditions. The back of the case is flat and to my surprise, it is not stamped. The back has a sticker that gives the illusion of being stamped. I was troubled at first but to be honest it doesn’t really matter anymore.
Wearability
There is no denying that I love this watch, I bought it for its looks and so far looks great. This watch give you an upscale vintage vibe without all the drawbacks of having a real watch from the 1960s. Its elegant, charming, accurate and requires no maintenance. Once the watch its in your wrist it sit flush, stays and pretty much disappears due to it being so lightweight. Its a great watch to use on scenarios where you’ll have access to light as visibility can be hard when dark.

It is worth noting that I somewhat baby this watch. First, I personally love its aesthetics and would hate to see growth wear and tear, especially when the crystal gets so scratch up that it is impossible to read and two: the watch has an acrylic crystal which is subsceptible to scratches more easily. I accidentally hit it with a hammer when I was working on the fence of my house.

The watch pairs effortlessly with any wardrobe thanks to its elegant, minimalist design—perfect for dress occasions or business casual settings. Just like a favorite cologne or pair of pants that boosts your look (and your confidence), this is one of my go‑to watches for dates. It blends seamlessly with my style and other everyday carry items. That said, I don’t wear it when exercising—not because it clashes with the outfit, but simply to avoid scratching it. Overall, the watch is versatile when it comes to wardrobe matching, though it ultimately depends on your personal style and confidence in wearing ii
How practical is it? For everyday activities very and the chronograph is very useful and fun. However the tachymeter is hard to read and it has no luminosity; so think twice when you’re camping with it or when you’re at the movies. I much as I would like to recommend this watch for anything, I can’t. Its visibility when its dark is zero, none. Lastly the watch is water-resistant to 5ATM (5 meters), which is good for daily wear or sweaty conditions, things like like hand-washing, splashes, accidental spills and exercising; however I’d be cautious when showering, swimming and beach use.
Conclusion
I appreciate its simple, yet elegance design. Its quartz movement ensures reliability, low-maintenance, performance, 5ATM of water resistance makes it versatile while the retro motorsport-inspired design adds style. You don’t have to dress expensive to look good nor to have the most accurate timepieces. This Timex Marlin Chronograph its a win in my watch collections
